Laptops and Firewire 1394

In addition to fast data transfer speeds and many other advantages, Firewire IEEE 1394 is popular for its ability to power devices, like cameras, from the PC.

Laptops can run Firewire IEEE 1394a and 1394b very well.  But since laptops generally optimize battery performance by powering mainly the CPU and hard-disk, devices such as 1394 adaptors are typically externally powered with a 12V adaptor.

Laptops with a 1394a "mini-port" connect with the data wires, but not the power and ground wires, so please use AVT Inc. accessory K1200070 or a similar adaptor that adds the power and ground connections.   Or use a powered 1394 hub, for 1394a or 1394b.  Or power the camera from the round I/O port using AVT Inc. accessory E3100001  (for 12 pin) or E3100018 (for 8 pin).

Please see the AVT Inc. accessories for specific product details.

Caveat: The PCI architecture on laptops often shares resources such as USB handling, which can impact image transfer speeds for 1394 adapter cards connected to the PCI system.  Tuning the process priority to favor the image processing application may be required.  Please see the priority tuning article elsewhere in this knowledge base.
